The main objective of the project was to establish a distance learning center at the "Politehnica" University in Timișoara, as part of a network of 49 centers in Central and Eastern Europe, 7 of which are established in Romania.

The following activities were performed:

• Development of new courses;
• Operation of distance learning courses;
• Staff training and development;
• Purchase of equipment for the Center;
• Improving the management and administration of IDD.

As part of the Phare Multi-Country program, the Network of Distance Education Centers became fully operational and for more than 15 years, it was the starting point for future partnerships in various EU projects, training several UPT employees in the postgraduate course LOLA (Learning about Open Learning), led by Herriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK; and UPT members in EDEN – European Distance and e-learning Network.
