Numerous multimedia projects, eXtended Reality applications and special prizes offered at the Interactive Digital Media Student Contest 2022

Organized by the Politehnica University of Timișoara, through the Multimedia Center and the eLearning Center, now in its 8th edition, the competition Interactive Digital Media Student Contest 2022 gathered on Wednesday, November 16, 2022, both online and physically, 24 students from high schools in Romania, bachelor's, master's or doctorate students, from Timisoara universities and other universities in Romania, Italy, Denmark.
This competition, organized annually since 2014 by the UPT Multimedia Center, is intended for young high school students and students, who participate individually or in teams in the elimination rounds of presentations of projects developed on the following themes:
This year's edition was attended by both individual students and students organized in teams. Competitors supported the projects created for the competition, sharing their passion for graphic design, IoT devices or web, mobile and AR/VR/XR applications through numerous creative and dynamic concepts and at the same time interacting directly with representatives of the business environment that formed the competition jury. The event took place hybridly, physically in the Polyvalent Hall of the Politehnica University of Timișoara and simultaneously online.
jury was formed by specialists from the university, industry and the companies that offered the awards: Nokia, Deltatel, SafeFleet, Cobalt Sign, Haufe Group, Nutechnologies and ISHSC award presented by Project Center of the Municipality of Timișoara.
The members of the jury were: Marius Budisteanu from Nokia, Arthur Csertus from Cobalt Sign, Claudio Suma from SafeFleet, Bogdan Cimpoeșu from the Haufe Group, Nicoleta Puculete from DeltaTel Group, Raluca Vasiliu from Nutechnologies. Multimedia Center of UPT was represented in the jury by: prof. Radu Vasiu – Director of the Multimedia Research Center, conf. Mugur Mocofan – Vice-dean and conf. Silviu Vert – all from the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies. The section dedicated to the Spotlight Heritage Timișoara project was chaired by Mr Diana Andone - the director of the eLearning Center.
At the opening of the competition, Prof. Dr. Eng. Florin Dragan, Rector of Timișoara Politehnica University, prof. univ.dr.eng. Radu Vasiu, the Director of the Multimedia Research Center and the President of the UPT Senate and prof. univ.dr.eng. Dan Lascu, Dean of the Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies.
Dr. Eng. Diana Andone, the director of CeL of UPT, continued with a presentation of the project Heritage under Reflectoare Timișoara/Spotlight Heritage Timișoara, which organizes the section International Spotlight Heritage Student Contest (eXtended Reality).
After many outstanding projects, emotional presentations, numerous questions and discussions, but also a judging that required a rigorous debate, the winners were designated as follows:
IDMSC Grand Prize 2022
IDMSC Grand Prize 2022, provided by Deltatel company, along with the IDMSC trophy 3D printed by NuTechnologies company was awarded to the student Stefan Chivu from the Faculty of Automation and Computers, Politehnica University Timișoara, for the project EasyPark – a mobile application used to make it easier to find a parking space in crowded public areas, by processing information taken from a network of sensors located in the field.
The two prizes for the new section International Spotlight Heritage Student Contest (eXtended Reality) were offered by the project initiator Heritage under Reflectoare Timișoara/Spotlight Heritage Timișoara, project co-financed by Project Center of the Municipality of Timisoara and Timiș County Council and went to the following projects that developed digital storytelling applications in virtual reality and augmented reality:
Explore Timisoara in VR
Explore Timișoara in VR, an application developed by Marius-Cosmin Tătaru, Sorina Zorita Gavriliuc-Voina, Radu-Dorian Stamatoiu (PhD students at the Politehnica University of Timișoara, Romania), Giulia Innocentini and Eliana Maria Torre (PhD students at the Università di Modena and Reggio Emilia , Italy) and Peter Guld Leth, Oskar Bill Zhou (master students at the University of Aalborg, Denmark), – which involves a new user interface, the addition of a 3D map of the city, some new objectives in Timișoara, including with audio and the change full description of how the user selects a location.
Timisoara quest in XR
Timișoara quest in XR, a virtual environment developed by Silviu Berzescu (master's student at the Politehnica University of Timișoara), Maria Toloni (master's student at the Università di Modena and Reggio Emilia, Italy), Mikkel Sang Mee Baunsgaard (master's student at the University of Aalborg, Denmark ) – where users can interact and learn more about objects from the heritage of the National Museum of Banat. All the content of the application is superimposed on reality, users can see the environment around them. The user can interact with the objects inside the boxes that are scattered in the real environment.
Web Development Award
Web Development Award, offered by the Haufe Group company arrived at Dumitru Gotca (undergraduate student) and Dragos Todoroșcean (master's student), both from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, "Ștefan cel Mare" University from Suceava, for the application Reportify – an application for reporting social issues, with the ability to register users by county, create posts that include photo, video, pdf, located on the map.
Graphic Design and Audio-Video Production Award
Graphic Design and Audio-Video Production Award, provided by the SafeFleet company was handed to the student from Timisoara Sandra-Ofima Vlad (bachelor's degree, Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies, Politehnica University of Timișoara) for the video Six of Crows.
Mobile Device Development Award
Mobile Device Development Award, provided by the Nokia company arrived at the project SilentSOS, created by Alexandra Ciui (Master's student at the Faculty of Automation and Computers, Politehnica University Timișoara). The purpose of the mobile application, SilentSOS, is to generate an emergency message, in a short time, by a hearing-impaired person in an emergency situation.
Internet of Things Award
The Internet of Things Award, provided by the Cobalt Sign company arrived at Gabriel Claudio Radu and George Bogdan Trîmbitaș (high school students in the 10th grade at the "Titu Maiorescu" Aiud National College) for the system Breezy Air Quality Meter – an Arduino project based on sensors, an ambient air monitor with alarm functions for critical situations, which gives the user information about the atmosphere he breathes (temperature, humidity, pressure, concentration of volatile organic compounds-VOC), but also signals warning sounds and lights when the values exceed the maximum allowed and constitute a potential danger.
The Special Award offered by the UPT Multimedia Center
Special Award provided by Multimedia Center of UPT went to Valentin Sorescu (undergraduate student, Faculty of Electronics, Telecommunications and Information Technologies, Politehnica University Timișoara) for the developed projects: Nokia WebApp StatisticTest – which aims to create and implement a web application that allows the user to access information about the status of tests carried out internally and Bluetooth controlled Arduino RC Car – a car controlled via Bluetooth, via a smartphone app.
Director of the Multimedia Research Center, Prof. Dr. Eng. Radu Vasiu he handed the diplomas of the present partners.
